EFFECTS OF ALLOPURINOL ON RENAL FUNCTION DECLINE IN HYPERTENSIVE PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASES

2014

Aim: To evaluate retrospectively the effects of allopurinol treatment on renal function decline in non-gouty hypertensive patients with moderate-to-severe CKD. Methods: We selected 22 patients treated with allopurinol (A) (100–300 mg/die) that were compared with 44 subjects not treated with this drug (B), matched with A for estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), age, gender and blood pressure values. Results: After a mean follow-up period of 16 months no significant difference was observed between the two groups regarding eGFR decline (A: -6.8 ± 11.6 ml/min/1.73 m2; B: -4.2 ± 9.3 ml/min/1.73 m2). Furthermore, the percentage of subjects with a value of eGFR reduction above the median w…

Mild obstructive sleep apnea increases hypertension risk, challenging traditional severity classification

2020

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The association of mild obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) with important clinical outcomes remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the association between mild OSA and systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) in the European Sleep Apnea Database cohort. METHODS: In a multicenter sample of 4,732 participants, we analyzed the risk of mild OSA (subclassified into 2 groups: mild(AHI 5-<11/h) (apnea-hypopnea index [AHI], 5 to <11 events/h) and mild(AHI 11-<15/h) (AHI, ≥11 to <15 events/h) compared with nonapneic snorers for prevalent SAH after adjustment for relevant confounding factors including sex, age, smoking, obesity, daytime sleepiness, dyslipidemia, chronic obstructive pulmona…

European Society of Hypertension practice guidelines for ambulatory blood pressure monitoring

2014

Given the increasing use of ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) in both clinical practice and hypertension research, a group of scientists, participating in the European Society of Hypertension Working Group on blood pressure monitoring and cardiovascular variability, in year 2013 published a comprehensive position paper dealing with all aspects of the technique, based on the available scientific evidence for ABPM. The present work represents an updated schematic summary of the most important aspects related to the use of ABPM in daily practice, and is aimed at providing recommendations for proper use of this technique in a clinical setting by both specialists and practicing physici…

Potential of the EPA/DHA 6/1 formulation to prevent endothelial dysfunction and cardiopulmonary remodeling in pulmonary arterial hypertension in rats

2016

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is characterized by remodeling of the small pulmonary arteries leading to a progressive increase in pulmonary vascular resistance and right ventricular failure. Pulmonary endothelial dysfunction, inflammation and oxidative stress promote the development of pulmonary hypertension. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acids (DHA) have been shown to protect the cardiovascular system and reduce inflammation and oxidative stress. The present study evaluate the potential of EPA:DHA 6:1 to prevent monocrotaline-induced PAH in rats. EPA:DHA 6:1 treatment (500 mg/kg/d, p.o) prevented the MCT-induced mean pul…

Knowledge gaps and future directions in cognitive functions in children and adolescents with primary arterial hypertension: A systematic review

2022

Arterial hypertension (AH) among adults is known to be associated with worse cognitive outcomes. Similarly, children and adolescents with AH could be expected to underperform during neuropsychological evaluations when compared with healthy peers. Our aims were to review the existing literature on cognitive functioning among children and adolescents with primary AH and to identify what additional evidence may be needed to substantiate the impact of hypertension on poor cognitive outcomes in this population. We conducted a systematic review of articles in PubMed and Web of Science published before 17 January 2022, reporting on cognitive testing among children and adolescents with primary AH. …

Behaviour of carbonyl groups in several clinical conditions: Analysis of our survey

2019

Protein carbonylation is a marker of oxidative protein damage, that is likely involved in the pathogenesis of several diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the protein carbonyl (PC) groups in different clinical conditions. It included different groups of subjects: 81 trained subjects; 23 subjects with mild essential hypertension; 31 middle-aged subjects with metabolic syndrome (MS); 106 subjects with MS not selected for age (subdivided into two subgroups, with and without diabetes mellitus); 91 obese adults subdivided in two subgroups (BMI 30-35 Kg/m2 and BMI > 35 kg/m2); 48 subjects with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) subdivided in accordance with the apnea/hypopnea i…

Role of curcumin in idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension treatment: A new therapeutic possibility

2013

The idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension is a complex disease that mainly affects pulmonary arterial circulation. This undergoes a remodeling with subsequent reduction of flow in the small pulmonary arteries. Because of this damage an increased vascular resistance gradually develops, and over time it carries out in heart failure. The inflammatory process is a key element in this condition, mediated by various cytokines. The inflammatory signal induces activation of NF-κB, and prompts TGF-β-related signaling pathway. Clinical evolution leads to progressive debilitation, greatly affecting the patient quality of life. The actual therapeutic approaches, are few and expensive, and include …

Antihypertensive efficacy and effects of nitrendipine on cardiac and renal hemodynamics in mild to moderate hypertensive patients: Randomized control…

1992

In this study antihypertensive efficacy, safety, and the effects of short-term nitrendipine administration on central and renal hemodynamics were evaluated in mild to moderate hypertensives. Our final goal was to ascertain whether the reduction in blood pressure induced by nitrendipine treatment was associated with maintained renal function. After a run-in period with placebo, 26 hypertensives without cardiac or renal disease were randomly assigned to a double-blind 8-week controlled trial with nitrendipine (N) 20 mg once a day (13 pts) or hydrochlorothiazide (HCT) 25 mg once a day (13 pts). Renal hemodynamic measurements included effective renal plasma flow (ERPF) and glomerular filtration…

Health Implications of Judo Training

2021

Although current physical activity (PA) guidelines regarding aerobic and anaerobic training are helpful for the population at large, many individuals prefer to engage in alternative forms of PA such as combat sports. As both a martial art and sport, judo is a physically demanding form of PA that potentially offers a novel experience, consequently leading to greater PA adherence. This study aimed to thoroughly search the existing literature to determine the health benefits of judo-specific training. PubMed and Web of Science were searched for original research studies. Only peer-reviewed studies that examined the effects of judo training in males and females aged 18–35 were included in the s…
